The story is a personal coming-of-age story. The story displays an early skateboarding memory, specifically the moment when I dropped into a large bowl for the first time. I was incredibly nervous and scared initially, but I felt a new sense of confidence when I finally dropped in.
The sequential narrative utilizes a cut-and-paste collage style using self-shot photographs. Using the cut-place style gives the narrative a counter-cultural look, which is appropriate for a skateboarding story because skateboarding was initially perceived as a counter-culture activity.
The collages display a cubist style. In earlier close-ups of the main character, the character is composed of mismatched photos of different facial features from various perspectives. As the character drops into the bowl, the character’s face becomes less distorted and more coherent. This shift from a distorted cubist look to a more coherent look demonstrates the initial fear of dropping into the bowl and then the self-assuredness and confidence after the initial drop. The saturated primary colour scheme brings youthful and intense energy while signifying that this story takes place on a hot summer day.
